Kuhuyan
Fragrance notes
Character
Kuhuyan opens with a startling slap of violet leaf and jasmine, not the dewy, romantic kind but something more metallic and bruised. The leather arrives fast, raw and unapologetic, wrapped in heliotrope’s powdery almond that does little to soften the blow. Within minutes, the base slides in with a heavy, salty ambergris and a sour oud that feels like marinade left out too long, while tonka bean tries to paste a sugary smile over the whole thing. The result is a fragrance that wears like a black leather jacket left in a humid locker: animalic, slightly aquatic from the ambergris, and dusted with vanilla that never quite sweetens the smoke.
This is a divisive scent, and the numbers back it up. With a 3.84 rating and modest longevity of 3.59, it performs adequately but never projects like a bomb. The sillage at 3.24 sits close to skin after an hour, which is merciful if you don’t want to clear a room. It feels synthetic in the way many niche leathers do, pushing an ozonic freshness that clashes with the dirty oud. The best wear is on cold fall evenings or the depths of winter, when the heat can tame the sour edges and let the powdery almond breathe against a wool sweater. It suits someone who wants a challenging, moody leather that leans more arthouse than mass appeal. Skip it if you prefer your oud smooth, your leather clean, or your compliments guaranteed. This one is for the lonely walk home through wet asphalt and dying leaves.
