Our take

Star anise opens Loverdose with a black-licorice bite, cool and faintly medicinal, and mandarin orange adds a quick citrus lift right alongside it, brightening the first few minutes before the anise settles in for good. That anise-and-licorice combination carries through the whole fragrance, an unusual backbone for what turns into a fairly plush floral heart of jasmine and gardenia.

Vanille and amber take over in the base, warm and a little powdery, softened further by woodsy notes that keep the sweetness grounded, never syrupy. Olivier Cresp is the perfumer credited on Loverdose, and anise keeps doing the talking even once the vanilla settles in, which sets it apart from an average sweet floral built purely on sugar and musk.

The wear time sits comfortably in the middle of the pack, neither disappearing early nor pushing past what the composition needs, and what trail it leaves is close and gentle rather than assertive. Between the licorice edge and the night-leaning warmth, this comes across as an after-dark fragrance, better suited to a bar or a late dinner than a bright afternoon.
