Our take

CK One Summer 2012 opens like a splash of ice water on a blistering afternoon. That first hit is all cucumber and lime, crisp and almost astringent, with mint adding a cool jolt and bergamot buzzing underneath. It’s aggressively fresh in a way that feels synthetic at first, but that’s the point: this isn’t trying to fool anyone into thinking it’s niche. It’s a cheap thrill, a party trick for hot weather. The heart leans into a watery, green core, with Granny Smith apple giving a sharp tang and lotus floating somewhere between floral and aquatic. Rosemary peeks through like a herbaceous shadow, but it’s the driftwood and rum in the base that save it from being a total evaporative letdown. The rum is more imagined than real, a dry phantom sweetness clinging to sandalwood and oakmoss.

The overall character is like a half-melted popsicle dropped on a beach towel: bright, sticky, temporary. That’s the honest weakness here. Longevity barely hits two hours, and sillage is a whisper after twenty minutes. For a summer flanker, that’s almost tragic. But if you want a 50-degree-day scent that won’t overwhelm a crowded bus or a rooftop barbecue, this works. It suits anyone who values instant refreshment over endurance, and skips you if you want a fragrance that lasts through dinner. Best worn in full sunlight, on a trip to the coast, reapplied every ninety minutes without shame. It’s a fleeting laugh, not a love letter.
