Our take

Chypre-Siam opens with a slap of cold kaffir lime and basil, green and razor sharp, like a gardener’s shears snipping wet leaves at dawn. That citrus bite is a tease, though. Within minutes, the jasmine and ylang-ylang unfurl like a sticky, sun-warmed garland dropped on damp earth. The heart is lush but not syrupy, a white floral that refuses to be pretty. Then the base drops, and here is where Manuel Cross earns his stripes. Oakmoss and civet drag that bloom down into the undergrowth, a rumbling animalic growl softened by benzoin and sandalwood. The spices and leather settle into a skin scent that feels less like perfume and more like an ancient forest floor after a rain.

This is a chypre built for autumn and spring, though it survives winter with a little patience. The overall image is a cracked leather journal left out overnight in a mossy garden, pages stained with citrus and sweat. It smells natural in the richest sense, not synthetic sunshine but real dirt and fur. The weakness is clear: longevity hovers around moderate, and sillage is intimate, a lover’s whisper rather than a room announcement. That 4.29 rating reflects a fragrance for those who value texture over projection. Wear it when you want to feel feral and composed at once. Skip it if you expect a crowd-pleaser or a cloud of sweetness. Who else is brave enough to carry civet on a Monday morning?
