Explore 100 Diptyque fragrances — notes, longevity, sillage and community ratings, matched to how you want to smell. The house dates from 1961.
Diptyque began at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris, founded by a trio of designers: the painter Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot and Yves Coueslant. They are usually described as a British painter, an interior designer and a theatre set designer. The house spells the second surname Montadre-Gautrot, and the name of the label itself comes from the Ancient Greek word for a two-panel image.
By the house's account, the three moved into fragrance in 1963 and launched a first scented candle. Personal perfumes followed in 1968. Sources disagree on who made that first eau de toilette, L'Eau: one account credits Norbert Bijaoui, another names Knox-Leet. Knox-Leet died suddenly in 1993.
Outside perfumers came in later. Olivia Giacobetti composed Philosykos, released in 1996, which Robin at Now Smell This describes as fig with green notes and a woody-earthy base. Olivier Pescheux, who worked at Givaudan, created Orphéon, Fleur de Peau and Eau Mohéli for the house. He died in 2023 at 57, after a long illness. Diptyque itself states that each fragrance is a collective work, with perfumers and illustrators working hand in hand.
As of early 2024, Diptyque was still owned by Manzanita Capital, the Fisher family's family office, which also held Malin+Goetz, Space NK and Susanne Kaufmann. The house is listed at 124 boutiques worldwide as of 2025.
These notes show up in Diptyque fragrances at least twice as often as in the catalogue as a whole. We worked this out from each fragrance's listed notes. It is not how the house describes itself.
