Our take

Attar Maitha opens with a sharp, almost licorice-like jab of anise that cuts through the air like a cold kitchen knife, but the real story begins when that edge melts into a thick caramel center. It’s the kind of caramel that’s been left on the stove just a moment too long, dark and slightly burnt, clinging to the spoon. From there, the drydown settles into a powdery vanilla musk dusted with tonka bean’s hay-sweet warmth, turning the whole affair into a plush, balsamic cloud that sits very close to the skin. This is a scent that whispers instead of shouts, which makes its modest sillage rating of 2.56 feel almost intentional, like a secret you’re only half-sharing.

The overall character reminds me of a grandmother’s velvet coin purse pulled from deep inside a handbag, soft, sweet, with a faint dusting of face powder and the ghost of old caramel candies. It’s unabashedly gourmand but never cloying, thanks to the anise keeping things from tipping into pure sugar syrup. The performance is its Achilles’ heel, longevity barely cresting three hours on average, and a rating that high (4.55 out of 203 votes) seems more a testament to the scent’s loveliness than its staying power. You will reapply, probably more than once.

If you adore cozy, skin-hugging vanillas with a bit of spice and don’t mind babysitting your fragrance throughout the day, this is your winter blanket. But if you need a projectile blast that announces your arrival from across a room, skip it. Wear it to a quiet dinner, a lazy Sunday, or tucked under a scarf on a cold afternoon. It’s sweet, soft, and deeply comforting, like a warm hug you have to keep asking for.
