Bolzano Mod.5 leads with a green apple note that smells unapologetically synthetic. It has the crisp, candy-like quality of a sour sweet rather than a fresh piece of fruit. For some, this will be the dealbreaker. The lily-of-the-valley in the top layer does little to soften this sharp opening. It sits in the background, providing a pale floral haze that cannot quite mask the plastic edge of the fruit. You have to tolerate this artificial start to get to the better parts of the composition. The transition is not seamless. There is a distinct shift where the scent moves from the fruit to the flowers.
Once it settles, the white rose and jasmine take over with a soapy, clean texture. It evokes the feeling of fresh bed sheets or a neatly ironed blouse. The base adds a warm, powdery amber and a dry cedar note that keeps the white florals from becoming too cloying. It is a fragrance that feels put-together and proper. It suits a formal office environment or a situation where you want to smell clean and composed rather than seductive. It is not a scent for a hot summer day, as the musk and amber can feel a bit heavy in the heat. It works best when the air is cool. The overall impression is that of a sculpture carved from pale pink soap, beautiful to look at but distinctly lacking in moisture.
