Our take

Cabana by La Rive opens with a brisk slap of cinnamon and cardamom, a warm spicy duo that promises more heat than the bottle can deliver. Within minutes, lavender and eucalyptus muscle in with a sharp, camphorated clarity, like a mentholated breeze cutting through a spice market. The cloves add a medicinal bite before vanilla and moss drag everything down into a softly woody, faintly sweet base. The overall character is that of a cheap cologne left on a poolside lounge chair, the sun slowly baking off its louder notes until only a faint vanilla moss ghost remains.

This is a synthetic fragrance, unapologetically so, and the numbers back up what your nose will tell you. Longevity barely grazes three hours, and sillage is a polite whisper that disappears before you finish your first drink. It feels light and fresh in the opening, but the heart turns oddly murky, as if the eucalyptus and lavender are fighting each other instead of blending.

Cabana suits someone who wants a spicy vanilla woody fragrance for a bargain and doesn't mind reapplying. It works best in transitional weather, fall into winter, especially on a cool evening when its warmth feels cozy rather than cloying. Skip it if you expect projection or lasting power, or if you find camphor and cinnamon together a bit too reminiscent of a holiday candle that lost its wick.
