The kitchen window is open just enough to let the evening air move through the room. On the wooden table sits a half-peeled mandarin orange next to a cracked jar of black pepper. The scent rising from the skin is bright and oily, cut through by the sharp bite of spice that makes the air feel alive. Neroli and orange float above it all, soft and floral but never sweet enough to feel like a chore. Vetiver adds a dry, grassy edge that keeps the citrus from leaning too far into something decorative.
Patchouli sits low in the blend, earthy and slightly cool, grounding the sharper notes without pulling the scene into darkness. There is a warmth here that feels intentional, like someone wanted the room to smell lived in rather than staged. The aromatic quality of the mandarin orange lingers near the pepper, creating a small tension that never quite resolves. It is unisex in the way a well-used space is unisex, shaped by whoever walks through the door rather than a label on the bottle.
Aidan Cave composed this 2013 release for Altern Essence Perfume, and the balance feels careful without being cautious. The woody accord hums quietly beneath the citrus, giving the air a faint structure that holds everything in place while the spicy threads keep shifting across the room, touching the edge of the table and the light coming through the glass
