Maxine
Fragrance notes
Maxine lives in the heavy velvet of a late-night jazz bar where the air is thick with hairspray and spilled bourbon. The leather here is not the soft kind that smells like a handbag. It is the rough, scuffed hide of a motorcycle jacket tossed over a velvet banquette. It mixes immediately with a vanilla absolute that feels sticky and resinous rather than edible. Oak and sandalwood provide a sturdy, plank-like foundation, giving the scent a physical weight that sits heavily in the air. This is a scent that demands a specific lighting and a specific kind of confidence to wear.
As the evening progresses, the amber and animalic notes rise to the surface, turning the leather sweeter and slightly sweaty. The powdery accord adds a vintage, cosmetic dustiness that clashes with the rugged wood. The problem is the vanilla. It eventually becomes too syrupy, suffocating the sharp, dry edges of the sandalwood until the whole composition feels cloying. It lacks the airiness needed to keep the heavy materials from suffocating the wearer. It is a demanding scent that becomes overwhelming.
