Our take

The opening of Musk by AXE is a surprise: lavender and lime struck through with green notes that feel less like fresh stems and more like crushed weeds from a summer field. It is an Oriental Fougere, but the fougere structure is quickly overtaken by a floral heart that is both powdery and animalic. Carnation, rose and jasmine do not soften the composition, they sweat through it. The dry down reveals the base of musk, precious woods and amber, but these notes are played at low volume, as if they are apologizing for their own presence. The overall character is that of a leather jacket left too long in a damp locker room, the kind of scent that clings to skin and to memory not by force but by familiarity. Longevity and sillage are modest, barely a whisper after two hours, which is honest for a fragrance that was never meant to shout. It feels synthetic in the way that mass market scents of the early eighties often did, but there is a strange integrity in that synthetic wallflower energy. This is a scent for someone who wants to smell clean but not innocent, who understands that a little dirt makes the soap work harder. Skip it if you need projection or if you expect a modern musk. Wear it in the autumn or winter, at night, when you want to fade into a room rather than announce yourself. How many vintage scents manage to be both nostalgic and still slightly embarrassing in just the right way?
