Our take

Navy Black by Zara opens with a sharp, citrusy bergamot that feels less like a Mediterranean sunrise and more like the cold rind of a grapefruit being twisted over a glass. That grapefruit soon takes center stage, tart and almost abrasive, before the vetiver slowly drags everything down into damp earth and green wood. It smells like a freshly peeled grapefruit dropped onto a mossy forest floor, the bright juice soaking into the dirt.

This is a straightforward woody aromatic that doesn’t pretend to be anything else. It’s synthetic but not plasticky, more like a crisp, minimalist cologne you’d find at a high street mall rather than a niche boutique. The problem is that it barely lasts. With longevity sitting around a 2.5 and sillage hovering just above skin, you’ll need to reapply within a couple of hours if you want anyone else to smell it. The drydown is pleasant enough, a clean vetiver with a whisper of pepper from the fresh spicy accord, but it remains an intimate ghost of itself.

Who should wear it? Someone who wants a cheap, easy reach for warm spring days or sticky summer afternoons, when even a hint of heavy base would feel like a chore. Who should skip it? Anyone looking for projection or a fragrance that survives a commute, because this one fades like morning fog. Wear it to the office, to brunch, or on a casual walk, but don’t expect it to carry through dinner.
