Our take

The 2014 Dior Poison Extrait is not your grandmother’s Poison. It is a darker, denser reworking from François Demachy that opens with a sharp, green slap of coriander cutting through the tuberose before the May rose softens the edges. The development is slow but deliberate, the floral notes folding into a thick vanilla that smells less like confection and more like a dried vanilla pod steeped in something animalic, a hint of warm fur left in the sun. It dries down to a powdery, almost dusty floral that clings to the skin with respectable longevity and a sillage that announces itself without shouting down the room.

The overall character is best captured as a glass conservatory at midnight, wilting white flowers and damp earth trapped under glass, the air thick with sweetness and a faint herbal rot. This is a heavy fragrance, unabashedly dense, and unashamedly synthetic in its plush construction. Not cheap synthetic, but the kind of glossy, smooth artifice that makes you wonder if nature could ever be this relentless without a lab’s help. It feels like a luxury boutique in autumn, not the department store floor.

Wear it when you want to feel like you are wearing a velvet dress indoors at an evening affair, because this thrives at night and in cold weather. The season split is almost unanimous for fall and winter. Skip it if you dislike tuberose with bite, if you shy away from anything that edges toward animalic, or if you need a fresh daytime scent. This is for those who want to be remembered, even if only by the last trace on a coat collar.
