About the house
Christian Dior appointed his friend Serge Heftler Louiche as director of Parfums Christian Dior, whose first fragrance was Miss Dior. Sources differ on the founding date, giving 1946 for the house and 1947 for Parfums Christian Dior. Miss Dior was a tribute to the designer's sister, the French Resistance fighter Catherine Dior. Anthology magazine reports that Dior asked the perfumer Paul Vacher for a collection that smells like love. In 2011 the original was renamed Miss Dior Original.
The house's perfumes include the work of Edmond Roudnitska, known for Eau Sauvage and Diorissimo. Eau Sauvage was Dior's first scent for men. Diorissimo is a lily-of-the-valley fragrance, and since the flower's smell cannot be extracted, the note has to be built from other materials. Bois de Jasmin describes the original as a forest-like impression of flowers rather than a posy, and says the current version has been reformulated to comply with IFRA regulations and finds it somewhat strident.
Calice Becker created J'adore, launched in 1999. François Demachy joined Dior in 2006 as its main nose. Poison came out of a search in which Dior tested approximately 800 scents created by independent perfumers. Francis Kurkdjian now serves as Perfume Creation Director, a post he holds while still creating for his own Maison.
Bernard Arnault's group bought the Dior business for one symbolic franc, and LVMH took full control of Christian Dior SE in 2017. Parfums Christian Dior now sits inside LVMH's perfumes and cosmetics division.
