Our take

Bergamot and pepper open Sauvage clean and sharp, the kind of start that smells more like aftershave than perfume, which is largely the point of the whole composition. Longevity here lands long-lasting, and the sillage stays modest, present without crowding anyone standing nearby.

Ambroxan takes over by the base and never really lets go, giving the whole thing a synthetic, almost mineral coolness that lavender and cedar only partly soften. Sichuan pepper, geranium and vetiver add real grit to the heart, so the composition never stays purely clean the whole way through. Elemi and pink pepper add a resinous, spiced texture to the top note before the ambroxan settles in, and patchouli sits low in the heart giving the whole thing a woody, herbal floor most fresh spicy fragrances skip entirely. This works nearly year round, spring through fall especially, and wears equally fine at a desk or on a Saturday errand run. Labdanum gives the drydown a faint amber warmth to sit against all that ambroxan coolness. It is built to be worn constantly rather than saved for occasions, and most people who own it treat it exactly that way.
