Side Effect doesn't bother with a bright opening. Rum and cinnamon show up immediately, warm and a little syrupy, with saffron adding a sharp, slightly medicinal edge on top. It's an unapologetically heavy start, and for anyone hoping for citrus or greenery to cut through it, there's nothing here that does that job, not even a passing trace.
Tobacco deepens the middle into something darker and drier, and hedione adds a faint, almost floral lift that's easy to miss under all the spice. Sandalwood closes the base out smooth and woody, letting the sweetness settle into the wood rather than sit on top. It clings hard once it's on and shows no hurry to fade, and the sillage leaves a trail wherever the wearer goes, more presence than most spiced orientals bother with.
This is a cold-weather, after-dark fragrance almost exclusively, built for winter nights more than anything in daylight, with no lighter side to fall back on. Someone drawn to boozy, spiced orientals with real weight will find a lot here; someone who wants brightness or restraint won't find it here at all.
