Our take

Vanille Benjoin opens with a sharp, boozy hit of benzoin resin that feels like licking a warm cedar plank soaked in dark honey. The vanilla arrives quickly, but it's not the fluffy, edible kind. This is a leathery, almost medicinal vanilla, thick with tonka and a dusty ambroxan shimmer that keeps it from tipping into dessert territory. As it settles, the Chinese cedar and Moroccan cedar emerge, dry and splintery, like an old hope chest left open in a sunbeam. The whole composition is sweet but refuses to be pretty.

If this fragrance were an object, it would be a well-worn leather armchair in a library where someone once spilled hot vanilla tea. It feels natural in its resinous core, but the synthetic edge of ambroxan gives it a modern lift that stops it from feeling like a dusty antique. The longevity is disappointing, barely four hours on skin, and the sillage stays close enough to be almost selfish. That rating makes sense for a scent that is more atmospheric than impactful. It suits someone who prefers their vanilla bruised and brooding, not a cheerful gourmand lover. Skip this if you want to be noticed from across the room or if you crave confection. Wear it on a chilly autumn afternoon with a wool coat, when you want a whisper of warmth that only you and a leaning companion will catch.
