Our take

Vanille Havane opens with a thumbprint of dark, sticky rum pressed into dried figs, the booze already softened by a cloud of cocoa powder. The tobacco note emerges not as a fresh leaf, but as the ghost left in a cedar humidor, dusty and sweet. Antoine Lie avoids the screechy plasticky vanillas that plague so many designer attempts; this is a rich, resinous vanilla absolute coiled around a core of amber and worn leather. The floral notes are barely a whisper, just enough to stop the composition from turning into a literal dessert.

The whole thing smells like the last sip of spiked hot chocolate left in a chipped mug on an antique writing desk at midnight, with the scent of old book leather bleeding through the walls. It is undeniably heavy and syrupy, a gourmand that leans more into the rum and tobacco than the cacao, but it wears surprisingly close to the skin. With a sillage just above 3 and longevity hovering near 4, it projects with polite insistence rather than shout, which feels right. This isn’t a cheap thrill; it feels crafted, niche in the best sense, though the dried fruit note can turn a little cloying in high heat.

This fragrance suits someone who wants a grown up vanilla, not a sugar bomb. Skip it if you prefer clean laundry scents or find boozy notes nauseating. Wear it on a cold autumn evening, perhaps tucked into a wool scarf at a dimly lit bar, or alone with a book when you need a velvet blanket of scent rather than a spotlight. Can a gourmand be both decadent and dignified? Vanille Havane makes a convincing case.
