Amalfi lemon and cardamom meet at the start of Voyage d'Hermes, one bright and juiced, the other dry and slightly peppery, and neither one wins outright. Underneath, a plank of cedar keeps everything upright once the citrus burns off, giving the whole composition a scrubbed, almost mineral finish. Jean-Claude Ellena built this for Hermes as a piece of luggage you could wear, and it still smells like that idea: nothing extra, no flourish, just clean lines around a warm center. Tea and green notes add a faint bitterness in the middle stage, giving the sweeter facets a dry counterpoint. Musk hums quietly at the base, more felt than announced.
Staying power settles into a comfortable in-between, present without being persistent, average without being disappointing. Projection settles into a small pocket of air, most apparent in the space right around the collar. Spring and summer suit it well, worn to an office or under a linen jacket where subtlety looks deliberate. Winter is the one season this composition seems to shrug off entirely, its citrus core feeling out of place against heavier coats and colder air. Restraint is the whole point here, all the way down to the last trace of cedar.
