Our take

Coconut opens Hypnotic Poison first, thick and rich, before plum and apricot round it into something riper and darker. Rosewood and tuberose take the heart somewhere gothic against the fruit, with caraway adding an unusual undertone few florals attempt. Longevity runs long-lasting, and the sillage is a modest bubble, noticed by whoever is close rather than the whole room.

Almond and vanilla dominate the base entirely, sweet and faintly bitter at once, with sandalwood and musk adding a soft, rounded finish. Rose and lily-of-the-valley add a last floral pass before the almond settles in for good, brief and easy to miss under all that sweetness. It is unmistakably an evening scent, fall and winter especially, built for candlelight more than daylight.

Some people find the almond too heavy, too much like marzipan left too long in a warm car. Others find that exact quality irresistible, and there is not much middle ground with this particular fragrance. Coconut lingers longer than expected too, resurfacing under the almond well after the top notes have gone quiet, and the nutty, powdery drydown is really the whole reason people come back to this bottle.
