Our take

Comme des Garcons 2011 opens like a morning in a half-demolished factory where someone left a bouquet of lilacs on a workbench. The aldehydes hit first, sharp and soapy, as if the air itself has been scrubbed clean with industrial solvent. Saffron and leather creep in quickly, warm and slightly animalic, but they never overwhelm. The heart is where this fragrance earns its contradictions: lilac and hawthorn bloom against styrax and musk, creating a floral that feels bruised, almost shy. Then the base arrives, and it is the real story. Industrial glue and brown scotch tape do not smell like a joke. They smell like a memory, like the inside of a shipping box from 1993, sticky and faintly toxic and utterly compelling.

This is a scent that wears close to the skin. The sillage is modest, the longevity decent but not heroic, which suits its character perfectly. It does not announce itself, it whispers in your ear and then disappears around the corner. The overall effect is that of a pressed flower glued to a shipping label. It is synthetic but not harsh, floral but not sweet, warm but not cozy.

Wear it on a cool spring morning when you want to feel strange and elegant at the same time. Skip it if you need a crowd pleaser or anything that smells friendly. This one is for people who read the back of ingredient lists and feel a small thrill of recognition. Who else would want to smell like tape?
