Our take

Rose Essentielle leads with rose and violet together, powdery and a little cool, with blackberry adding an unexpected dark fruit sweetness right at the start. Taif rose deepens the floral heart considerably once it arrives, joined by mimosa and jasmine for a softer, more yellow-toned floral edge alongside the rose.

Musk, sandalwood, patchouli and guaiac wood settle into the base, woody and a little dry, giving the rose somewhere warm to rest by the time the fragrance finishes. Beatrice Piquet is the perfumer behind it, released in 2006, and the whole thing stays powdery throughout, reading like a classic rose soap rather than a fresh, green one. Staying power runs at a moderate level, holding its powdery rose character for a normal wear, and a soft veil of scent surrounds the wearer, picked up by whoever leans in close.

Spring is where Rose Essentielle feels most at home, with summer and fall still workable before the flowers start to feel out of season. It stays true to its name throughout, an essential, old-fashioned rose built on powder and violet, nothing experimental about it, a well-made version of a style that has existed for decades and has not needed much updating.
