Imitation Man

Character
Imitation Man opens with a brisk slap of citron and black pepper, the nutmeg adding a dusty warmth that keeps it from veering into outright freshness. This is not a polite entrance. The heart reveals a Turkish rose that is leathery and bruised, orris giving it a cosmetic, almost vintage feel, while violet whispers something powdery and melancholic. As it dries down, the castoreum and myrrh take over, turning the leather into something animalic and sticky, like the inside of a well-worn saddle that has soaked up decades of sweat and resin. Patchouli and vetiver ground it further, but there is a synthetic edge to the leather accord that saves it from feeling like a dusty relic.
The overall character is a gentleman who just spent the night in a 1970s discotheque and woke up in a tannery. It is heavy and decidedly niche, neither sweet nor fresh, but rather a bitter, narcotic warmth. With a rating just over four and middling longevity and sillage, it performs respectably but does not shout. Wear it in the crisp air of spring or the damp chill of fall, ideally in the evening when shadows make the florals feel more dangerous. This suits someone who wants to smell like a complex, slightly unhinged story. Skip it if you prefer clean scents or fear the animalic. After all, how often do you find a perfume that smells both like a bouquet and a beast?
