Imitation Woman
Fragrance notes
Character
You spray Imitation Woman and get hit with a garland of white flowers that have been turned up to eleven. Ylang ylang and orange blossom are thick and honeyed, jasmine and rose adding a powdery sweetness that nearly cloys. Then the aldehydes sizzle in like a champagne bubble popped over black currant’s sharp tartness, a flick of licorice pulling everything into a weird, shiny tension. It’s a woman at a dinner party whose laugh is just a little too loud around the cheese board, her perfume leaving a trail of waxed fruit and incense smoke behind the velvet rope. The dry down softens into a powdery patchouli and sandalwood base, but the incense stays ghostly, always threatening to reassert itself.
This is a chypre for the modern maximalist, not the minimalist. It’s synthetic in the best way, like a frosted mirror in a windowless room. The longevity is solid at four to five hours, but the sillage is a hushed bloom rather than a shout, which is actually its main weakness for the price. You won’t announce yourself from across the room, though you’ll linger on a silk collar the next morning. Perfect for a spring wedding or a fall gallery opening, but skip it if you want beachy breezes or fresh laundry. Who has time for subtlety when you can smell like a promise that might just be a threat?
