Interlude Black Iris opens on violet leaf, rosemary and bergamot, a green, slightly bitter start that gives no hint of the density waiting underneath. Amouage rarely does anything small, and this fragrance is no exception, the restraint of the opening feeling almost like a setup for what comes next.
Orris, olibanum, myrrh, amber, labdanum and vanilla crowd the heart into something thick and resinous, incense-heavy in a way that feels closer to a chapel than a garden. Pierre Negrin built a middle section dense enough to need real patience from the wearer, vanilla the only note working to soften all that resin.
Leather, oud, sandalwood, patchouli and cedar settle the base into dark, resinous depths, leather and oud pulling equal weight. Longevity is the standout trait here, holding on stubbornly and asking for only a light hand at application, and it announces itself, leaving a noticeable trail as you move.
This is heavy, serious perfumery, best kept for cold evenings and occasions that can carry that much weight. The iris and incense stay locked together right through the drydown, never separating into two competing ideas.
