Our take

Play It Lovely opens with a squirt of blackberry syrup and a citrus fizz, a pear that’s more pear candy than orchard fruit. The first impression is bright and sweet, the kind of bubbly that makes you think of a cheap mimosa at brunch. Then the florals roll in: orchid and tuberose, creamy and a little waxy, with night-blooming cereus adding a soapy, almost aquatic sheen. It’s a fruity floral that feels like it was designed by committee in a boardroom, not by a perfumer in a lab. The base of tonka and amber tries to ground things with a warm vanilla-ish fuzz, but the patchouli is so shy it might as well be a rumor. The overall effect is a synthetic, mall-friendly sweetness, like a vending machine that also sells mood rings. Given the longevity barely clears two hours and sillage hovers around whispering distance, this is a fragrance that evaporates before you’ve decided if you like it. It suits a teenager on a summer afternoon, someone who wants to smell like a fruit salad with a corsage, but anyone craving depth or staying power should skip it entirely. Wear it to the boardwalk, to a pool party where you’ll be in and out of the water, and treat it as a spritz-and-forget — because it will forget you first.
