Our take

Russian Oud opens with a furious blast of agarwood, raw and medicinal, before the cacao pod steps in to soften the edges with a dusty, bitter sweetness. The castoreum and natural musk arrive next, not as a clean animalic whisper but as the warm, slightly sweaty fur of a beast that has been sleeping next to a fire. Labdanum, myrrh, and cedar anchor the drydown with a resinous amber glow, smoky and balsamic, like resin seeping from an ancient birch tree in a snowbound forest. The overall character feels like a samovar left to simmer on a wood stove, its dark contents thickening and sweetening hour after hour.

It is a heavy, natural, unabashedly niche composition, and the numbers tell a fair story: longevity hovers around a solid but not monstrous 3.88, with sillage at 3.31, meaning this is a close-wearer for most of its life unless you overspray. That moderate projection is arguably its soft spot, given the intensity of the raw materials. But the scent evolves so slowly and deeply that the intimacy becomes a feature, not a flaw.

This is for someone who loves real animalics and dark gourmands, a person unafraid of smelling like sweat and chocolate and smoked wood. Skip it if you want a clean, loud, crowd-pleasing ambroxan bomb. Wear Russian Oud on a freezing winter night, preferably with a heavy coat and nowhere to be, because it demands stillness to be fully appreciated. It is not a party; it is a solitary hearth fire. 🖤
