Our take

L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Edition Bois opens with a brisk, almost aggressive citrus slap: yuzu and lemon verbena cut through a resinous cypress note like sunlight through wet timber. Jacques Cavallier’s 2010 woody aquatic rework doesn’t waste time on small talk. The heart blooms with a peculiar blue lotus that feels both watery and powdery, while nutmeg and saffron add a dry shimmer that keeps the floral elements from going saccharine. As it dries, Tahitian vetiver and cedar take over, but the sandalwood is surprisingly shy, leaving a clean, slightly salty skin scent rather than a deep wood pile.

The overall character is a beachside boardwalk at dawn: the wood is damp from overnight fog, the citrus rinds scattered on wet sand, and the sun not yet hot enough to burn off the salt. It feels more synthetic than natural in the opening accord, but the drydown settles into a comfortable, mainstream-friendly freshness that never tries to wow a room. With a longevity of 3.5 and sillage barely 3.2, it evaporates before it can build a solid argument. That’s the weakness: you get a brief, lovely impression, then it’s gone. Suited best for a man who wants a quiet, elegant freshness for humid spring and summer afternoons, preferably in casual or office settings. Skip it if you crave projection or a winter-weight fragrance. Isn’t that the trade-off with so many aquatic citrics?
