Our take

Brutus opens with a brisk citrus slap, bergamot and mandarin sharp enough to cut through morning fog, but that brightness is a decoy. Within minutes, the lavender steps in like a stern uncle buttoning his tweed jacket, and the geranium and rose don't soften him, they add a dusty, violet-tinged sternness. The drydown is where the real muscle shows: patchouli and oakmoss grind together into a dark, earthy base, cedar lending a dry plank of structure, labdanum and amber warming it just enough to avoid feeling like a cold cellar. This is not a sweet fragrance, nor a fresh one, despite that fleeting citrus top. It is heavy in the way a damp oak log is heavy, natural rather than synthetic, and unmistakably niche in its refusal to please anyone in a hurry.

The overall character? Picture a leather-bound journal left out in a rainstorm, then dried on a radiator, the pages swelling with moss and bitter herbs. It smells like a man who reads poetry and chops wood, or a woman who borrows his coat and forgets to return it. With longevity hovering around moderate and sillage closer to skin than spectacle, Brutus lives in your personal space, not the room. That is its only real weakness, it whispers instead of roars, but the whisper has weight.

Wear it on a gray spring afternoon when the ground is still wet, or deep into fall when the air smells of dead leaves and turned earth. Skip it if you crave projection, sweetness, or crowd-pleasing freshness. This is a fragrance for the introvert who knows exactly what they want and does not need applause.
