Our take

It opens with a bright, almost aggressive squirt of pineapple and mandarin, the citrus not so much juicy as it is sharp and synthetic in that way mainstream fruity florals often are. The pineapple leaf note in the heart adds a green, slightly fibrous texture that keeps the sweetness from tipping into tropical drink territory, while jasmine sambac and orange blossom lend a sheer, soapy white floral veil. As it dries down, the vanilla and sandalwood emerge, but they are thin and powdery, like the ghost of a sun cream, with Peru balsam adding a faint, resinous warmth that vies with vetiver for something earthy but never quite gets there.

The overall impression is that of a linen shirt left crumpled in a beach bag for three days: clean on first sniff, then vaguely fruity and slightly stale. It wears as a purely synthetic, perfectly pleasant department store splash, which is fine for a quick, uncomplicated spritz before brunch on a humid Saturday. The numbers are honest: a 2.63 for sillage and 2.81 for longevity mean you are paying for a fleeting cloud that evaporates into a vague whisper of vanilla within two hours. If you want a fragrance that shouts your arrival or lingers into a dinner date, skip it. But if you need something inoffensive, cheap, and cheerful for a spring morning when the only goal is not to offend anyone while pretending not to try, Eau de Lacoste fits the bill. Who actually pays for a scent that vanishes before the waiter brings the bill?
