Our take

Burqua by SoOud opens with an unsettling jolt of ink and violet, a metallic purpleness that recalls fresh printer toner and wilted florals. The leather note is raw and slightly animalic, not the smooth glove leather of luxury but something worn and scuffed. Soon the agarwood and guaiac wood build a smoky, teak-laced frame, while a jammy rose and jasmine wrestle with sage and cardamom. The drydown softens into a resinous amber benzoin myrrh blend dusted with patchouli and a faint powdery veil. It feels like a black clad librarian who smells of old paper, ink, and a secret cigarette smoked behind the stacks. This is heavy, warm, and decidedly niche, with a slight synthetic edge in the violet that keeps it from being fully luxurious.

The longevity is decent at around six hours and the sillage is moderate, projecting close enough for intimacy but not announcing you from across a room. Rated 3.94, it is honest about its flaws: the composition occasionally feels muddled, struggling to decide whether it wants to be a leather spice bomb or a resinous woody incense. Who should wear it? A person who wears all black and prefers their scents complicated and a little brooding, someone who enjoys the friction between floral and foul. Who should skip it? Anyone who finds animalic notes or ink accord challenging, because this will not compromise. It lives best in fall and winter, worn to a dimly lit bar or a solitary evening walk, when the cold air sharpens its edges without stripping its warmth.
