Our take

Jean-Claude Ellena’s Brin de Reglisse opens with a lavender so crisp and airy it might have been distilled from a Provençal breeze, all herbal snap and barely-there sweetness. The licorice arrives not as a sticky black rope but as a dry, almost dusty aniseed whisper—think the faint bitterness of fennel pollen on warm stone. The hay note soon threads through, turning the composition into a sun-baked wisp of straw left in a field after harvest. The whole thing feels like a sketch in pale watercolors: the green and soft-spicy accords never push, never shout. It’s an Oriental Fougere stripped of any Oriental bombast, a lavender that forgot to be loud.

This is a fragrance built for proximity—an intimate secret more than a statement. Longevity is a disgrace (barely two hours on skin), and sillage hovers close enough to be a personal aura rather than a room-filler. You get a fleeting, lovely daydream, not a full novel. Best worn under a linen shirt in early spring, when the air is still cool but the sun has real ambition. It suits the person who values a quiet, natural-smelling elegance over projection and performance; skip it if you want your scent to last through lunch. One vivid image: a single lavender stalk, still damp with dew, lying forgotten on a stack of sun-dried hay. Does something so delicate need to roar?
