Our take

Ma Nishtana opens with a blast of aldehydes and black pepper that feels like winter air cracking open a brick of castoreum-laced leather. The spices arrive in a rush, clove and cumin and nutmeg jostling with allspice, their heat tempered by a smoky myrrh and a labdanum that drips like amber resin over old wooden pews. This is not a clean incense, it is the ghost of a synagogue hearth, ash and saffron and rose petals ground into the floorboards. The drydown settles into a woody balsamic embrace, sandalwood and patchouli holding the leathery animalic threads together, but the cumin and caraway never fully retreat, leaving a faintly sour, sweaty edge that keeps everything human and unvarnished.

The overall character is a spice market at dusk, the last rays of sun turning clouds of frankincense and clove smoke into a stained glass window, warm and heavy but never cloying. It leans natural in its roughness, niche in its refusal to compromise. The longevity is adequate, around six hours, but the sillage stays close to the skin, a personal ritual rather than a broadcast. For fall and winter nights, it suits someone who wants a meditative, slightly challenging scent, a philosopher in a leather jacket. Skip it if you prefer clean ambroxan or gourmand sweetness. How often do you smell a perfume that smells like a question asked at a Seder table, ancient and alive?
