Our take

Alias opens with a slug of dark rum and saffron that smells more like a sticky cocktail spilled on a leather jacket than anything baroque or polite. The woody notes are there, but they’re playing backup to the boozy, almost syrupy start. Quickly, the heart swings into a sweet trinity of cacao and licorice, with labdanum and birch adding a smoky, resinous undercarriage. This is where Alias shows its hand: it’s a gourmand with a dirty secret. The drydown lets tobacco and a thick vanilla absolute roll over everything, dusting the licorice with a soft musk that feels like a cashmere blanket someone left too close to a campfire.

The overall character fits a single image: a half-eaten chocolate truffle forgotten on a worn leather armchair next to a glass of spiced rum. It’s sweet, undeniably heavy, and sits closer to the niche end of the spectrum thanks to that licorice-birch bite that keeps the vanilla from becoming cloying. The sillage is polite rather than bombastic, and longevity hovers around six hours on skin, which feels fair for a scent this dense. It thrives in winter and deep fall nights, when the cold air can temper its warmth. It suits anyone who likes their sweetness edged with smoke and a little weirdness, but if you want something airy or strictly fresh, skip this entirely. Can you imagine wearing this in July? Neither can I.
