ANKA
Fragrance notes
Character
ANKA by Vertus opens with a slash of saffron, a shock of metallic citrus from grapefruit, and a peach so ripe it almost bruises. That fruit is quickly buried under a heap of spice: clove and nutmeg, a scratch of carrot seed, and the resinous, almost leathery embrace of cistus incanus. The drydown steadies into a warm, woody base of amber, fir, sandalwood, and oakmoss, a grounding that feels like unvarnished oak against powdered velvet. This is a scent that wears a heavy coat of spicy powder, not fluffy but dense, like a felted wool blazer lined with dried apricot leather. It leans clearly niche in its willingness to be abrasive, but the longevity is excellent at over eight hours, and the sillage sits close enough to invite rather than announce itself. Who should wear it? Those who enjoy a sweetly spiced, woody fragrance with a metallic shimmer and don’t mind a powdery, almost cosmetic texture. Who should skip it? Anyone who finds carrot seed cloying or wants their fruits to stay fresh rather than cooked into a compote. Best worn in the deep cold of winter, or on a crisp autumn day when you want to feel buttoned up and quietly strange. It works both day and night, though the amber and spice feel most at home under streetlights. The only real weakness is that the opening clash of tangy grapefruit and syrupy peach can feel more like a collision than a conversation, but once it settles, ANKA becomes an odd, compelling companion.
