Our take

You are greeted by bamboo and a kitchen spice rack of cardamom, cumin, ginger, and cinnamon, so sharp and aromatic that it feels like a clean slap from a tropical heat wave. This opening is bold, almost aggressive, but it quickly softens into something more humid and floral as orchid, jasmine sambac, and a whisper of sea water creep in. The geranium and rose lend a powdery, almost cosmetic sheen that sits atop a base of sandalwood, vetiver, and myrrh, where the heliotrope dusts everything with a sweet, almond-like fuzz. The overall image is of a salt-crusted orchid left on a sun-warmed wooden dock, half dried, half blooming, and slowly being licked by the tide.

This is a niche composition through and through, Bertrand Duchaufour’s signature hand evident in the way the cumin and bamboo never quite let the flowers get too cloying. It feels natural in its rawness, but the longevity and sillage are disappointingly modest, barely floating past two hours before retreating into a skin-skimming whisper. That low performance drags down what is otherwise a perfectly pleasant, unisex aromatic spicy number.

Balinesque suits someone who values an interesting, transportive scent for their own private pleasure over projection and crowd appeal. Skip it if you need a fragrance that lasts through a workday or commands attention in a room. Wear it on a balmy spring evening, preferably near water, where the breeze can do the heavy lifting that the perfume itself cannot sustain.
