Our take

The morning air in the garage is cool and thick with the scent of motor oil. A man stands near the workbench, wiping grease from his hands with a rag. He reaches for a bottle of Black Bold and presses a small amount into the skin of his wrist. The immediate atmosphere changes as bright lemon and bergamot cut through the heavy industrial smell, sharp and clean against the concrete floor.

As he picks up a wrench, the air around him shifts. Guaiac wood rises, dark and resinous, mixing with the distinct, slightly licorice bite of star anise. The scent wraps around him like a wool coat, sitting close to the fabric of his shirt. It feels grounded and serious, a stark contrast to the metallic tools scattered across the table.

He leans over the engine bay, and the deeper materials begin to speak. Leather emerges, smelling of old saddles and well-worn gear, softened by the creamy, sweet warmth of tonka bean. There is a dry, smoky edge to the blend, with a faint powdery softness that keeps the animalic strength from becoming too aggressive in the small space.

The citrus has faded into the background, leaving a rich, aromatic trail of wood and spice. It is a scent that belongs in this room, among the steel and the dust. The floral hint is barely there, hidden beneath the dominant leather and the soft spicy heart of the anise.
