Our take

Black Magenta opens with a laser sharp slash of pineapple, green and tart enough to almost sting, backed by a peppery jolt of galbanum that feels more like crushed stems than resin. That initial burst is the brightest moment, and it fades quickly into a powdery orris softened by a faint, almost old fashioned carnation and a whisper of orange blossom. The base is where the fragrance settles into its true character: a smoothed out tobacco, black amber that feels more earthy than sweet, and a creamy sandalwood that never goes full gourmand. The overall image is a vintage silk scarf embroidered with tropical fruit, left to dry in a cedar closet. It feels decidedly niche in its refusal to pander, synthetic in the best sense, like an idea more than a juice. But here is the problem: sillage barely registers after twenty minutes, and longevity struggles past three hours. This is a skin scent for someone who wants a private pleasure, a quiet counterpoint to a loud day. It suits spring and summer evenings best, a spritz before a dinner party where you intend to lean in close. Skip it if you demand projection or a full day’s wear. It performs like a half written love note, lovely but incomplete.
