Cuir Béluga promises leather in its name and mostly delivers powder and vanilla, which is the first thing to know before buying it. Tangerine and aldehydes open bright for a few moments, but the leather idea shows up only as suede, soft and suggested rather than worn.
Olivier Polge builds the heart on immortelle and patchouli, and immortelle is doing a lot of the work, giving off that maple-and-curry warmth it always brings along with a soft, almost edible sweetness. By the base, vanilla, heliotrope and amber take over completely, and what leather remains reads as suede fresh from a glove box, soft-edged and pale, never a worn saddle.
It sits close on skin, a modest bubble noticed mainly at close range, and it holds on for a solid while once applied, longer than the soft opening would suggest.
This is a soft, almost androgynous gourmand better suited to someone who wants comfort over structure, and it will frustrate anyone buying it specifically for a leather fragrance. Worn as what it actually is, a warm vanilla-suede composition with only a suggestion of hide, Cuir Béluga is genuinely lovely.
