Domus Numeni opens with a sharp bite of black pepper and cloves. Elemi resin adds a cool, pale edge to that heat. The initial spray feels like walking into a stone hallway where someone has just extinguished a match.
Candle wax sits at the center of the composition. It smells like the melted pool at the bottom of a glass jar, mixed with the scent of old linen stored in a wooden chest. Frankincense and myrrh provide a deep, resinous weight. The heart feels heavy and still. Vietnamese oud and birch tar dominate the drydown. They create a dark, mineral smoke that clings to the skin like soot. Immortelle brings a dry, hay-like bitterness that prevents the resins from becoming too sweet. Papyrus adds a crisp, papery texture to the base. Ambrette offers a soft, musky warmth that tries to round out the sharper edges of the tar. Dust is a literal note here, evoking the feeling of an abandoned library or a forgotten attic space.
The metallic accord runs through the entire wear, giving the perfume a cold, industrial sharpness. It creates a distance between the wearer and the scent. This fragrance is difficult to live with for an entire evening. The birch tar and metallic combination becomes abrasive rather than comforting. It lacks a gentle transition.
