Our take

Emerald Dragon opens with a sharp, medicinal edge that may surprise those expecting a smooth welcome. The tansy hits first, bright and bitter, joined quickly by hyacinth and a cool slice of bergamot. Orris sits underneath, powdery and dry, keeping the citrus from feeling cheerful. This is not a sunny start. It feels deliberate and a little austere, as if the door is being held open only halfway.

Palo santo enters with a clean, resinous smoke, curling around the green bitterness of geranium. Labdanum adds a warm, sticky weight, while guaiac wood deepens the air with dry timber. Castoreum brings a leathery, animal warmth that feels heavy against the herbal top. The room smells of old wood, crushed leaves, and faint skin. It is earthy and aromatic, never sweet, with a smoky stillness that feels grounded.

Patchouli takes over slowly, damp and dark, supported by oakmoss and vetiver. The citrus has vanished completely. What remains is a forest floor after rain, herbal and mossy, with iris lingering in the background like pale dust. The scent feels natural and unpolished, more niche than commercial, suited to someone who enjoys bitter greens and leather over comfort or sugar.

That opening bitterness is the price. The tansy and orris can feel harsh and clinical before the woods arrive. If you dislike sharp herbal starts that lean medicinal rather than fresh, this will not win you over, no matter how beautifully the smoke and patchouli settle once the first minutes pass.
