Just Tobacco opens with a sharp bite of ginger and cardamom that quickly gives way to the star of the show. The tobacco here is dry and leafy rather than moist, rubbing against a heavy dusting of cinnamon and cloves. As the initial heat settles, the heart reveals a deep, dark cacao blended with vanilla and a hint of anise. It smells like a well-worn leather armchair in a room filled with old books and burning fireplace wood. The atmosphere is dense and intimate, surrounding the wearer in a blanket of warmth that fits a cold night out or a quiet evening indoors.
The base brings a resinous amber that ties the spices to a handful of dried fruits, adding a chewy, sticky sweetness to the mix. This is not a fresh or airy composition. It is a heavy, gourmand-leaning scent that feels entirely masculine due to the rugged nature of the tobacco leaf cutting through the sugar. The cacao is rich and bitter enough to prevent the vanilla from taking over completely, but the spices never really rest. It is a fragrance that demands attention from the first spray until the end of its life.
Composed by Chris Maurice, this Ghalati release wears its inspiration on its sleeve with absolute clarity. The limitation here is the lack of evolution. Once the dried fruits and amber settle, the scent stays in that same sweet and spicy lane without shifting or revealing new facets. It is a one-dimensional ride that pleases immediately but offers little complexity for those who enjoy a changing dry down.
