Montaigne’s opening is its least graceful moment. Bitter orange, tangerine, coriander, and jasmine arrive with a brisk, slightly busy snap, while mimosa brings a dry yellow-floral dustiness. Give it a little space to settle and the composition becomes far more composed, with narcissus lending a green, heady edge and black currant adding a dark-fruited glint.
The heart feels like a yellow silk scarf laid across polished wood: soft in texture, warm in colour, and touched by something quietly stern. Amber and sandalwood deepen the floral body, while vanilla rounds its corners and ambrette adds a gentle musky softness. The powdery accord stays present throughout, so Montaigne will appeal to someone who enjoys vintage-leaning florals with sweetness, structure, and a distinctly dressed-up air. Those seeking a sheer citrus scent may find its density too much.
Its longevity is long-lasting, and the sillage is noticeable, giving the fragrance a clear presence without making its floral detail hard to appreciate. Caron launched Montaigne in 1987, and that date helps explain its polished, old-school character. It feels especially at home in autumn and winter, though its citrus lift gives it a place in spring as well.
