Our take

No. 4 by Lanoe is built for the person who wants a forest floor without the gloom. The opening pairs grapefruit and lavender, but those bright notes step aside quickly. This is not a citrus scent that happens to have wood in the base. It is a woody aromatic that uses its top notes to clear the air before the real work begins. The argument for wearing this outside rests on how the heart handles its green and floral elements. Pepper and grass give the orchid and iris a crisp, upright posture. The composition feels like a walk through a garden where the soil is still damp but the sun is fully out.

The drydown is where the fragrance makes its case. Cashmere wood, cedar, and sandalwood wrap around the patchouli and vetiver to create a texture that is both powdery and earthy. This balsamic foundation feels grounded rather than heavy. The warmth of the base notes supports the aromatic top without letting the scent become sharp or medicinal. It maintains a clean line between the fresh spicy accords and the deeper wood. You get the sense of standing among tall trees where the light hits the trunks in clear patches.

Simone Schmelzer composed a scent that captures that specific moment when the air turns crisp enough to see your breath but the ground has not frozen. The mix of grass and iris creates a visual of green stems pushing through dark, rich earth, while the sandalwood and cedar act as the sturdy trunks holding the canopy open above.
