Our take

Why does a perfume that opens with such a sharp, medicinal bite end up smelling so soft? Pantomime by Kilesa starts with a cool, camphoraceous sting of hyssop, pushed forward by the biting heat of black pepper and the crisp, almost licorice-like snap of anise. It feels clinical and remote, like walking into a spice shop on a winter morning. But that sharpness is a prelude. The fragrance quickly folds into a heart of tobacco and palmarosa, where the herbal edge of the flower smooths out the tobacco’s rugged texture. It is a tobacco note that feels cleaned up, stripped of its usual ashtray heaviness, and blended into something that leans floral rather than tarry. This is where the friction lives: the opening promises something austere and bracing, but the core is unexpectedly gentle.

The base is where the promise of the top notes gets fully abandoned. Instead of a dry, bitter finish, Pantomime settles into a bed of vanilla and amber that feels plush and sweet, with vetiver adding just enough grassy bitterness to keep it from becoming a gourmand. The hyssop and pepper are ghosts by this point, leaving behind a sweet, aromatic tobacco musk that is pleasant but feels like a different fragrance entirely. The jarring transition is the price of admission here. If you are looking for that cold, medicinal herbaceousness to last, you will be disappointed. Pantomime is a split personality, and it ultimately chooses the comfort of vanilla over the thrill of the spice.
