Our take

The Sunday market is loud with colour and heat. A crate of pineapples sits next to a bucket of hyacinths, their stalks still damp from the morning spray. Someone is slicing the fruit on a wooden board, the juice running onto the wood. A few feet away, a vendor scoops vanilla into a glass jar, the smell of the pod suddenly clearer than the fruit. Jasmine and iris are tangled in a bunch of flowers waiting to be sold, their pollen dusting the paper they rest on. The air is thick with it all at once. It is sweet, but not cloying. The musk and amber sit underneath the sugar, holding the scent to the skin rather than letting it float off into the heat. Patchouli adds a green, slightly bitter edge that stops the vanilla from becoming a dessert. You lift your wrist and smell it again. The pineapple is still there, sharp against the powder of the iris. It is bright without being thin, and the tropical notes feel grounded by the heavier base. You wonder if the person next to you can smell it, or if it is yours alone in this crowd. The scent keeps shifting between the fruit and the flowers, never settling on one thing long enough to become boring. You reach for your bag to check the name on the bottle, then decide you do not need to.
