Our take

800 Black starts with a citrus jab, but the yuzu is thin and quickly swallowed by a saffron that feels more like a hot metal filament than spice. The tonka bean eventually drags it into a sweet, vanillic amber that is unmistakably synthetic but not unpleasant, like a polished plastic surface warmed by the sun. The whole thing reads as a glossy aromachemical skeleton, a woody aromatic ghost with a leather-trimmed steering wheel and no engine. It is a cologne distilled for a single moment of contact, because after an hour it fades into a skin scent that politely begs for reapplication.

The sillage is a whisper, the longevity a shrug. For a bottle that costs less than dinner, the trade off is acceptable if you expect nothing more than a quick sugar rush of tonka and saffron, a sweet aromatic dusting that disappears before your coffee goes cold. Who wears this? Someone who wants to smell vaguely expensive in a checkout line but does not want the commitment. It is incapable of projecting confidence, only a polite hint of vanilla. Skip it if you demand presence or crave a real saffron gritty and animalic, because this is the sanitized version, the scent of a hot towel in a sterile lounge.

Wear it to a fall dinner where you will be indoors, where the heater works, where you can afford to reappear fresh from the bathroom with another spritz. Winter gives it a longer life, but spring is a cruel exposure. It is a fragrance for the man who buys a black sweater from Zara and calls it a night. 🖤
