Our take

Aldehydes hit first in White Linen, a cold, sharp fizz that Estée Lauder built the whole fragrance around, the kind of clean that smells manufactured on purpose rather than by accident. Lemon and peach soften the edge slightly, but this opens sharp, and anyone who associates aldehydic florals with old-fashioned formality will recognize the family immediately. That combination stays put for a long while, the mossy-woody base outlasting the aldehydes by a wide margin, and the sillage carries a modest, quiet presence around the wearer.

The heart is enormous, more than ten flowers on the formula, and yet it never smells like a single one of them in particular. Hyacinth, jasmine, rose, iris and lily of the valley blur into one pale, powdery bouquet, a deliberate abstraction, not a failure of the composition. Iris adds a cool, root-like quality that keeps the whole bouquet dry, not sweet.

Oakmoss and vetiver anchor the drydown, rewarding the extra time spent wearing it. The base turns green and mossy, sandalwood and cedar adding a dry woody frame, while honey, benzoin and tonka bean warm it enough to soften the aldehydes' coolness.

White Linen belongs to a different era of perfumery, built for daytime, for someone who wants clean to come across as a statement, not an accident.
