Cannabis leads the top of Black Afgano, and it smells exactly as green and resinous as that suggests, paired with davana, saffron and thyme in a combination that feels more like a hidden room than a bottle of cologne.
It softens into resins and woodsy notes fairly quickly, with tobacco, coffee and cinnamon adding weight, while violet and raspberry sit almost buried underneath, barely visible against everything else.
The base is where it turns serious: agarwood, incense, amber and guaiac wood, thick with animal notes and musk, finished with ambroxan and vanilla for a little polish. This is very long-lasting on skin and the projection is noticeable from the first spray, so a light hand matters more here than with most fragrances. Fall and winter conditions bring out the resins and the smoky, balsamic character the accords lean on, while the near-total absence of a daytime profile makes it a poor fit for an office or anywhere formal.
It makes no attempt at friendliness. Fans of oud, tobacco and a green, herbal darkness will recognize a serious composition in the cannabis top and the resinous base that follows it.
