Our take

Lustre opens with a sharp, almost dusty crack of cardamom over a rooty orris that feels more like powdered iris root than a lush floral, a clever trick that sets a serious tone. The heart turns warm and woody, sandalwood and cedar softened by a patchouli that stays clean, not earthy, while the base is where the real drama lives: myrrh and labranum wrap around a sticky vanilla and tonka, all resting on a bed of cypriol and styrax that gives it a faintly smoky, leathery undertone. The overall character is like a velvet-lined jewelry box left open in a sunbeam, rich and still, with every resinous note catching the light but never shouting about it. This is not a loud fragrance. The sillage sits close to the skin, which the numbers confirm at just under three out of five, and longevity is decent but not a marathon performer, lasting maybe six hours before it becomes a whisper. That makes it a fragrance for intimate settings, a quiet dinner or a cool spring evening where leaning in to catch a whiff is part of the appeal. It feels polished and nuanced, neither synthetic nor aggressively natural, more like a well-crafted niche piece that leans slightly mainstream in its wearability. Who should wear it? Anyone who appreciates a balsamic, powdery vanilla anchored by woods and resins, especially in fall or winter. Who should skip? Those who want projection or a bright, fruity lift. It’s a thoughtful composition from Rasquinet and Guerlain, but the restrained sillage keeps it from feeling like a statement, and that is both its charm and its limitation.
